Admission Requirements

Admission to graduate study in the IMSE degree program is granted by the NCSU Graduate School, upon the recommendation of the IMSE Institute. You may apply online, using the Graduate School website. An application package can be obtained either from the Graduate School or the Institute office. You must adhere to the application submission dates established by the Graduate School.

Specific IMSE Admission Requirements:

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher (4.0 scale)
  • Undergraduate baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, preferably in engineering or computer science, and with satisfactory recommendations
  • Acceptable GRE scores
  • TOEFL scores for students whose native language is other than English, minimum 550
  • Knowledge of computer programming
  • Adequate knowledge of Calculus

All applicants are required to submit GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores. GRE scores are taken into consideration in assessing admission into the IMSE program. They also play a very important role in forming the basis for making recommendations for the Dean’s Fellowship that supplements an internship or a research assistantship.

Students whose native language is other than English, regardless of citizenship, must submit TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores as evidence of ability to use English at a level of competence adequate for graduate work. The minimum TOEFL score for admission is 550. All incoming international graduate students with TOEFL scores between 550 and 590 must take an English language placement test shortly before the classes start to determine which, if any, FLE course(s) they must take. If the test results indicate that a graduate student needs one or more FLE courses to reach acceptable levels of written or oral English, that students must take the first FLE course during the first semester at NCSU. The FLE courses may be audited so that they are of minimal cost to the student. Any student in the 550-590 range who fails to take the placement test or who fails to register for the required FLE course for that semester will have his or her registration canceled.

Please note: The student must be prepared to audit courses to overcome any academic deficiencies.
